David Matas
David Matas CM (born August 29, 1943) is a Winnipeg-based human rights lawyer, author, and researcher who has served as Senior Honorary Counsel for B’nai Brith Canada. Since 1979, he has maintained a private practice in refugee, immigration, and human rights law and has represented Canada at international forums, including the UN Conference on the International Criminal Court and the OSCE Conferences on Antisemitism and Intolerance.
Matas has been actively involved with organizations such as Amnesty International, the Canadian Council for Refugees, Beyond Borders, and the Canadian Helsinki Watch Group. A vocal critic of impunity for human rights abuses, he has authored numerous books and manuscripts, asserting that “nothing emboldens a criminal so much as the knowledge he can get away with a crime.”
